Oserian Development Company

Founded in 1969, the Oserian Development Company LTD is located in the Rift Valley province, northwest of Nairobi. The climate is hot and dry with an unpredictable rainy season spanning from May to October. The area experiences ample sunshine, creating an ideal climate for growing flowers. Thus, 70 percent of Kenya’s exporting flower farms are located in area.

Kenyans in the Rift Valley region often do not have access to clean drinking water and poverty is rampant. Already high food prices continue to increase, making it difficult for Kenyans to provide for their families. Additionally, the lack of good infrastructure makes it difficult to access distant markets or jobs. Oserian became Fair Trade Certified™ to improve farmer livelihoods and showcase its commitment to positive farming practices.

My primary goal is to see all my children achieve university education and I need all the help I can get to fulfill this dream. I am grateful for the support that I have received through Fair Trade. I urge the consumers of our flowers to continue buying more Fair Trade flowers so that we may continue improving our lives and those of our families and communities.

Premiums pay for secondary school scholarhsip

The workers of Oserian decided to invest Fair Trade premiums into high school scholarships for employees' children. These community development funds will cover school fees which will greatly ease their parents' debt.

Joint Body allocates premiums for school infrastructure improvement

To help prevent erosion and damage at the local Oserian High School, the workers approved the use of Fair Trade premiums to construct a proper drainage system. This investment in infrastructure not only benefits the children of the workers, but the rest of the children of the community who attend the school as well.

Land purchase by Joint Body

Oserian's workers collectively decided to purchase land upon which to build a community facility. The purchase was funded entirely using the Fair Trade premium.
