IOFPCL - Indian Organic Farmers Producer Company

The Indian Organic Farmers Producer Company Limited (IOFPCL), headquartered in Aluva, Kerala, is India’s largest organic producer company owned by farmers. Together, they serve over 2,500 primary producers in the Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu regions. The company follows cooperative and Fair Trade principles. A Board of Directors governs the organizational structure, but each member has one vote on all decisions. The organization’s main crops, all organic, include Malabar black pepper, ginger, turmeric, vanilla, coffee, cocoa, coconut oil and cashew nuts.

IOFPCL, formed in 2004 and incorporated under the country’s Companies Act of 1956, takes on all challenges to assist members and their families in the production and marketing of organic and Fair Trade Certified™ products in domestic and international markets. The company pays Fair Trade premiums to producers through its collective marketing efforts. The organization is also a Registered Exporter Member of the Spices Board and Agricultural Producer Export Development Agency (APEDA) which has greatly helped increase exports.

Programs

Advanced Payments to Farmers

When able, the cooperative gives advanced Fair Trade premium payouts to members which allow them to cover any timely expense, including school tuition fees, farming equipment and medical attention. About a quarter of all premiums were appropriated to members in advance for this cause.
