FNSF - Fazenda Nossa Senhora de Fatima
Ricardo Aguiar Resende, a third-generation coffee farmer, and his wife Gisele, own and operate the farm. The couple is deeply committed to the health, safety and overall wellbeing of their farm workers, and has implemented several social initiatives to benefit the workers’ commu¬nities. They have initiated projects like organic community gardens at the local school and brought medical services to the farm. They see Fair Trade as a natural complement to their existing efforts, and a great opportunity for their employees to feel a sense of ownership not only of their work and the land, but also of the management and use of the Fair Trade premium.

Earlier today I could not clean the weeds properly to prepare the field for the harvest and to help the workers pick the coffee easier. A Computer and Internet Center
Fazenda Nossa Senhora de Fatima (FNSF) inaugurated their new computer and internet center in May 2012, built to benefit farm workers and the local community. This “Digital Inclusion and Training” center was built in part after the farm learned their workers wanted to learn more about computers and take classes – a result from the general need assessment for workers Fair Trade standards require. The farm partnered with several organizations to build this center with 12 computers and two TV screens with video access for classes.
While this was not built with the Fair Trade premium, the Fair Trade process facilitated identifying this need. Workers will use this center for future trainings and workshops that will be funded with Fair Trade premiums. The center will be used by local students during the day and by Fair Trade farm workers during the evenings and weekends.
In October 2012, Fazenda Nossa Senhora de Fatima held a training session for workers on the Fair Trade Committee as well as for other workers interested. The training session included a reinforcement of Fair Trade principles and criteria for farm workers, the Fair Trade label and the impact of Fair Trade in the U.S., in addition to the Fair Trade standards based on economic development, social responsibility, environmental responsibility, empowerment, management of Fair Trade premiums and the roles and responsibilities of the Fair Trade Committee. The Fair Trade Committee stresses the importance of the participation of all workers in the discussion of the use of Fair Trade premiums and new programs that would further develop the community. Fair Trade Committee members continue to work diligently to implement the Fair Trade standards in order to benefit all farmers and protect the environment.
After democratically-electing a Fair Trade committee, the workers at FNSF decided to invest their Fair Trade community development premiums in healthcare and education. First, the workers chose to bring eye and dental care to the community.
