ASOANEI - Productores Agroecológicos Santa Marta y Perijá

ASOANEI is an association of indigenous and small farmer agro-ecological producers from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serrania del Perija. It was founded in 1996 to create an organic farming program that promotes the preservation of indigenous and peasant cultures in north-eastern Colombia. The association is comprised of more than 600 indigenous families belonging to four distinct ethnic groups: the Arhuacos, Koguis, Wiwas, and Kankuamos, as well as small farmers who share a holistic view of forests, rivers, mountains, and animal protection and who value an emphasis on sustainable agriculture. Through the conservation and care for natural resources, ASOANEI seeks to improve living conditions for members and their communities while upholding the values of their ancestral heritage.

Their strategic plan for the future incorporates social, environmental, and cultural initiatives. They seek to improve living conditions for members by implementing food security programs, education, and infrastructure, and they strive to protect the traditional values of indigenous and small farmer communities by purchasing land for the Mamos (traditional indigenous authorities) and by reconstructing ceremonial sites for ancestral cultural practices. They are deeply committed to maintaining the harmony between humans and nature, which has led them to develop many environmental protection programs, including soil recovery, integrated solid waste management practices, and wildlife preservation.

At ANEI, we pay tribute and perform rituals to our coffee as we do with all other things in our Universe.”

Drying Infrastructure

After severe rainy seasons in recent years, ANEI voted to invest in two coffee dryers to improve quality and to facilitate the process of preparing cherries for transport.

Cupping and Quality Laboratory

ANEI invested premium funds into setting up a cupping laboratory, which allows them to ensure their coffee is of the highest qualtiy. With this equipment, they are also developing a procedure to categorize the traits of coffees from different regions.
