Grandmother, Coffee Farmer, Leader: Meet Donha Conceção

01/05/2010 - 8:14 PM

donha-c-brasil-photoLast year Fair Trade was more necessary than ever for millions of family farmers like Donha Conceção as our global community faced the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. A farmer’s wife in Minas Gerais, Brazil - Donha Conceção’s husband died only days before the birth of her fifth child. Thirty years ago, she was left with nothing but the knowledge of coffee farming her husband had shared with her. As a widow, Donha Conceção passed through difficult times when she didn’t have food to eat or a bed to sleep in. But that changed when she joined the Fair Trade Certified™ coffee cooperative Coocafé. With their help she learned soil management and sustainable farming practices, thereby improving the quality and selling price of her coffee. The results? Successful coffee business, land ownership, education for her children, a home for her family, and leadership opportunities. Donha Conceção was the first woman to be elected to Coocafé’s board and remains a respected member and leader in her Fair Trade Certified cooperative. She participates faithfully in all cooperative meetings, and though she now owns a car, Donha Conceção continues to walk the nearly two hours each way to attend the group’s meetings. She says it’s so that she doesn’t forget her past. TransFair USA depends on charitable donations to bring new products - and the farmers and farm workers that produce them - into the life-changing Fair Trade network.  Click here to make a tax-deductible gift to TransFair USA as we work together to build a lasting solution to world poverty.
