Fair Trade Ensures that Traditional Herbal Practices Continue
Fair Trade Month Sponsor: Traditional Medicinals
Fair Trade Month sponsor, Traditional Medicinals, is preserving traditional herbal remedies and improving the lives of tea farmers.
For Traditional Medicinals®, obtaining Fair Trade™ Certified herbs just makes good business sense. Established in 1974, the company has spent decades developing long-term equitable and transparent relationships with their herb suppliers and producers.
According to Josef Brinckmann, VP of Research and Development at Traditional Medicinals, “While the herb trade has historically been veiled in secrecy, participating in an equitable trading system enables us to build long-term, collaborative relationships in which we can grow and plan together. We can be assured that the money that we spend on our herbs is helping to improve good quality of life. We can plan for the future together. And we can predict consistent quality and quantity of herbs. This simply isn’t possible when spot-buying herbs on the open market, with no relationship to the producer community, as many companies do.”
One of the company’s primary Fair Trade Certified producers is Royal Ottoman Farms, spread over 4,000 acres in the Egyptian regions of Fayoum, Menya, New Valley, Oases, Beni sweif, Asuit, Nubaria and Aswan. Founded in 1906, in the upper Egyptian city of Apotik, the Royal Ottoman commitment to Fair Trade principles ensures a sustainable livelihood for a worker and farmer community of over a thousand people. Traditional Medicinals obtains organic, Fair Trade Certified chamomile, spearmint and hibiscus from Royal Ottoman. Due to Royal Ottoman’s certification, as well as Traditional Medicinals’ other Fair Trade suppliers, the company now has 14 Fair Trade Certified teas, making it one the largest Fair Trade Certified herbal tea companies in the United States.
Says Brinckmann, “Our business model is dependent on tradition—traditional herbal remedies created from plants that are collected or cultivated in the traditional manner. The preservation of these traditions can only continue if the herb trade provides a meaningful and appealing livelihood for people. Fair Trade certification helps this happen.”
