COPROCAEL - Cooperativa de Productores de Café la Encarnación Limitada
Located on the Honduran border with El Salvador in the department of Ocotepeque, the Cooperativa de Productores de Café la Encarnación, or COPROCAEL, was formed in the wake of the devastating hurricane Mitch. In a region where most coffee farmers were producing between 15 and 25 bags of coffee per hectare of land, COPROCAEL members, with the aid of the cooperative’s services such as easier access to organic fertilizer, began producing an estimated 50 bags per hectare. COPROCAEL mainly carries caturra coffee. COPROCAEL chose to become Fair Trade Certified TM in order to assure sustainability in production, environmental protection, create conditions that would guarantee high quality coffee, and to guarantee that the farmers and their families would be the main benefactors of the sale of their product. COPROCAEL produces micro lots of specialty coffees in order to gain better prices and directly benefit small producers by characterizing their coffee with specific buyer needs. COPROCAEL’s ultimate goal is to always be sustainable and stable, in coffee production and in the lives of their producers.
