Located in the Santa María region of Colombia, the Fundación Indígena Seynekun operates as an activist organization and coffee cooperative to promote the rights of indigenous coffee-growing families. The area is nestled in mountains and surrounded by nationally protected forests. The foundation started its work in 2006 with an estimated 600 Zenues tribe families, temporarily displaced from prevalent violence in the region. In 2007, a group of coffee growers from the same region invited the foundation founders to a meeting to discuss their plight. At the meeting, foundation representatives learned coffee growers share common problems with indigenous populations. In June 2007, the foundation opened its membership to all coffee growers –indigenous or not – and changed its objectives to include the promotion of coffee growing as a method for empowerment and commercial justice.
