Fair Trade USA Releases New Sales Data from SPINS at Natural Products Expo West
OAKLAND, Calif. (March 6, 2012) – Fair Trade USA, the leading third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States, today reports new data revealing that sales of Fair Trade Certified™ products grew a whopping 75 percent between Q1 and Q4 last year.
The data, from SPINS LLC, indicates that sales of Fair Trade Certified products grew fastest in the mass merchant – mainstream grocery, food and drug – channel, which saw a 95 percent increase in Fair Trade Certified product sales in 2011.

The changes will better serve the needs of farmers, businesses and consumers that look to the Fair Trade Certified label to ensure that rigorous standards, transparency and efforts to provide the greatest impact possible have been met.
The recent Bloomberg’ article “Victoria’s Secret Revealed in Child Picking Burkina Faso Cotton” contains serious allegations of child labor on a farm which appears to be part of a Fair Trade cooperative.
While this situation did not involve any business or producer partners of Fair Trade USA, we are saddened and dismayed to learn of any instance of child labor within or outside the Fair Trade system.
