Oakland, Calif. (October 1, 2009) - October is Fair Trade Month, and TransFair USA, the only independent, third-party certifier of Fair Trade Certified products in the United States, is pleased to announce a full line-up of local, grassroots events celebrating this year’s theme: “31 Days, 31 Ways.”
Throughout the month, community organizations, student groups, faith-based initiatives and other non-profits are partnering with local businesses and retailers to build awareness of Fair Trade Certified products and bring attention to the dedicated farmers and farm workers who produce them.
The newly launched website www.FairTradeMonth.org is the hub of all of the Fair Trade Month 2009 activities. Each day, TransFair USA will post a new fact about Fair Trade and a simple way in which consumers can support it. Each is sponsored by a different TransFair USA licensee, many of which have organized events and promotions in honor of the day, including product tastings, giveaways on Twitter (@fairtradeusa ), movie screenings, coupon codes and trivia contests. Information, photos and videos also will be available on Facebook, YouTube and flickr.
“By dedicating an entire month to promoting Fair Trade Certified products, we help to grow product sales, which benefits retailers, companies with licensed products, and most importantly, farmers and farm workers around the world,” said Paul Rice, president and CEO of TransFair USA. “This is a great example of how our individual purchasing power can empower farmers from some of the world’s poorest countries.”
Fair Trade Certified is a market-based system for sustainable development whereby importers and retailers pay a premium price to farmers and farm workers who commit to grow and produce goods in accordance with rigorous standards that guarantee worker rights, community empowerment and environmental sustainability. TransFair USA’s list of Fair Trade Certified products now spans more than 30 categories, from coffee, tea and cocoa, to flowers, wine and even sports balls.
Through the sales of Fair Trade Certified products in the United States – which hit an estimated $1.1 billion in 2008 – TransFair USA has been able to deliver close to $150 million in additional revenue to farmers and farm workers in rural communities throughout the developing world.
