In honor of Mother’s Day , we’d like to highlight a few inspiring stories about the hardworking, dedicated and inspirational women and moms of Fair Trade:
Rosa García - Hoja Verde Flower Worker, Ecuador
Rosa García is a worker at Hoja Verde , a family-owned flower farm in Cayambe, Ecuador. Through the Children’s Health Program the farm established with its Fair Trade premium, Rosa is able to receive preventative healthcare for her children in the form of check-ups and treatments, vaccines, and vitamin supplements at low co-pays.
“This program helps me cover all of my children’s medications and the money that I saved helps me provide quality food for my children,” – Rosa Garcia, Hoja Verde Worker
Pilar Rocha - Jardines Piaveri Ltd. Flower Worker, Ecuador
Pilar Rocha is another great source of inspiration for flower farmers as well as a great example of who benefits from our purchases. She works at Piaveri Gardens nestled into a valley in mountainous volcano region of Ecuador. Jardines Piaveri Ltd . used its Fair Trade premiums to fund a microcredit, low-interest loan program for workers and their families that would like to start their own small business. It also finances community programs that ranged from providing 50 school chairs to elementary schools in the area to helping elderly seniors in local parishes and towns. Jardines Piaveri Ltd. also provides annual breast cancer and health screenings for their female workers and their families. Pilar has benefited from these programs as well as the atmosphere of empowerment Fair Trade has brought to Piaveri Gardens.

“I’ve worked on many flower farms in my life, but this one is different. We’re paid more and job safety is better. And for the first time, I feel respected.” – Pilar Rocha, Jardines Paiveri Worker
Vanesa Perez – Agrogana Flower Worker, Ecuador
The workers at Agrogana know the importance of education and democratically decided to use their Fair Trade Funds on afterschool programs for the children of their workers. Vanesa Perez from Latacunga, Ecuador (pictured below), teaches English to elementary school-aged children of Agrogana employees for three hours every Monday through Thursday.
These women are a snapshot of what your gift of Fair Trade flowers can do for mothers and women around the world. We know how important that smile is when Mom walks in and sees those roses in bloom. Now take a moment to imagine the smile on the face of the mother who can now send her child to school on a scholarship funded by Fair Trade premiums or the HIV/AIDS support group in Kenya made possible by your purchase. This Mother’s Day, pamper your mom with a gift that gives back and impacts the lives of moms and their families around the world.
