With Fair Trade & Café Femenino, Maria Elva Correa Torres is now empowered and respected in her family and community.
Maria Elva Correa Torres, CECANOR (coffee), Peru
Maria dreams of using the income from her Fair Trade coffee to start a small grocery business at the Sunday market.
It's hard work, but I'm helping our four children study. So the effort is well worth it.
While Maria’s husband has been a Fair Trade coffee farmer for many years, Maria began to see the benefits for herself last year. After hearing how the women’s chapter (Café Femenino) of the Cecanor Cooperative had helped other women in her community, she decided to join herself. Now she proudly contributes to the family income and helps support her four children as they finish high school and begin college. Because of the Café Femenino program and gender trainings in the community, women like Maria have earned a place of respect and power in the family and domestic violence has been considerably reduced.
