The 32 founding farmers of Cooperativa Cafetalera Olancho, or COCAOL, were initially inspired by the cooperative model that they witnessed on a visit to Costa Rica. COCAOL is a relatively small cooperative located in central Honduras near the White Mountain and old growth forests. COCAOL members adamantly protect the environment they share with the native plants and animals. Over 80% of COCAOL production is organic, and the 53 members of the cooperative have allocated the Fair Trade premiums from their high quality coffee towards supporting local schools, improving infrastructure, and improving quality. School supplies, road repairs, and new wet and dry mills brought to fruition from Fair Trade premiums have propelled this small cooperative towards a sustainable and profitable future.
