Have you been spending the hot summer days under your favorite tree sipping a delicious iced coffee? Mmm, relaxing! Did you know that coffee trees need shade too
Coffee has traditionally been grown amongst forest trees, in the shade. Growing coffee under shade discourages weed growth, may reduce pathogen infection, protect the crop from frost, and helps to increase numbers of pollinators, which results in better coffee!
Unfortunately, in order to produce faster, higher yields and prevent the spread of coffee leaf rust, many coffee plantations began to grow coffee under sunnier conditions. The fewer shade trees that are in coffee plantations, the less biodiversity exists in those plantations.
Most Fair Trade Certified
™ coffee is shade-grown. The natural canopy under which shade coffee is grown often provides the last refuge for plants, animals, insects, and birds who have lost much of their habitat to the vast destruction of tropical forests. Shade-grown coffee also slows climate change by preventing deforestation.
What can you do about it? Besides looking for Fair Trade Certified coffee at your local restaurant, cafe or grocery store, you can now participate in TransFair USA’s alternative gift program, Gifts of Fairness
