Today millions of people worldwide are joined in celebration of peace. Created by the United Nations in 1981, International Day of Peace [4]has become a global phenomenon uniting governments, universities, religious groups, businesses, schools, and nonprofit organizations. Peace Day 2009: silent marches, explosive parades, intimate meditations and huge interfaith gatherings.
Brazilian communities celebrated the International Day of Peace last year by organizing tree planting and stream clean-up events in honor of the environment. Fair Trade partner and coffee cooperative Associação dos Costas [5] has been striving for a peaceful and sustainable community for 21 years.
A Fair Trade association of small-scale coffee farmers, Associação dos Costas [5]has worked to preserve communal lands by conducting in-depth soil preservation analysis. The cooperative used Fair Trade social premium funds to support a kindergarten, community computer lab, and medical services like a drug addiction recovery program.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said “Peace is not merely a goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.”
Here at Fair Trade USA [6], we strive to adhere to Dr. King’s belief that peace is something we must practice every day. By working to build a global fair trade community focused on equality, integrity, and sustainability, we hope to create peace in ways great and small.
