Chances are, if you woke up this morning, on the last day of September, and felt the slight chill in the air that marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall you thought first of brewing a hot cup of coffee. The same moment you awoke, a banana farmer in Ecuador wiped the morning dew from bunch of green bananas as he took his machete to the stem, a farmer on a cooperative in Ghana tended to a cocoa tree in the afternoon heat, and on a tea estate in India a worker watched the sun set over a sprawling field of tea. These seemingly disparate events, people, and places are actually closely intertwined. Your daily routine can help determine the destinies of people the world over, and every purchase you make matters.
Today also marks the beginning of Fair Trade Month 2010. This year’s Fair Trade Month is more interactive and more connective than ever before. The theme is Every Purchase Matters, and our goals are to help you connect with the people that produce the things you buy, and to hear what aspect of Fair Trade matters most to you. All of the food we consume was grown by someone’s hands, someone’s family. Fair Trade creates a kind of mindfulness in people’s lives about what they buy, a way for people to connect, a window into another reality.
This brand new Fair Trade Month website lets you voice your opinion on what you think are the most important benefits of Fair Trade: Fighting Poverty, Protecting the Environment, Building Sustainable Business, Empowering Women or Supporting Education. Every time you purchase a Fair Trade product, you are voting with your dollars and supporting these causes. We want to hear from you about why you support Fair Trade.
That’s just the beginning. Every day of October we will be highlighting several of the great companies that bring Fair Trade products to your grocer’s shelves, as well some of the international organizations that work closely with Fair Trade on the ground. Each company or organization is sponsoring a day during Fair Trade Month, so stay connected in order to learn more about these groups and win one of dozens of Fair Trade Certified product giveaways that they’ve generously donated.
Check back daily to hear directly from Fair Trade farmers and workers from around the world, talking about how Fair Trade has impacted them and their families. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter, where each day we will feature fun and easy actions that you can take to support Fair Trade far beyond your every day purchases.
Help us spread the word and meet our 2010 Fair Trade Month goals of:
* 1000 donations for Fair Trade
* 100 new Fair Trade Towns campaigns
* 200 events throughout the country
* 8,000 followers on Twitter
* 60,000 supporters on Facebook
Like the Fair Trade movement itself, Fair Trade Month is a partnership between the producers of Fair Trade goods, the companies that sell the products, and everyone who buys Fair Trade. Please join in the fun. Welcome to Fair Trade Month.
