Jose Isidro Lara grows some of the highest quality Fair Trade Certified coffee around

Meet Jose Isidro Lara, member of COCAFCAL in Honduras. He started coffee farming on one acre that was given to him by his father. With the Fair Trade prices he receives, he has been able to invest in 9 more acres throughout the area.

Fazenda Nossa Senhora de Fatima (FNSF) is a 230 hectare, 100% organic, family-owned coffee farm in the Cerrado Region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. With 110 farm workers in employment, 40% of whom are women, FNSF became the world’s first Fair Trade Certified coffee estate in January 2012.

Letter of support from 5,000 Brazilian small coffee farmers

In Brazil there are 6,000 small coffee farmers who are members of Fair Trade CertifiedTM small farmer organizations. Today Fair Trade USA received a letter from Coocafe, a Brazilian cooperative made up of 5,000 of these 6,000 small farmers. The translated letter – which has been posted with the permission of Coocafe - expresses their support for broadening the benefits of Fair Trade to include farm workers on large coffee farms while simultaneously strengthening coffee cooperatives to ensure they continue to benefit as well.

Fair Trade farmers trek to Costco and Whole Foods Market to see their products firsthand

Fair Trade USA works with more than 1 million farmers and workers from over 70 countries around the world. These are the people who grow our flowers, pick our coffee, harvest our tea, and plant our bananas, the people who take care of our earth at its most basic level. We recently had the opportunity to bring some of these farmers to the United States, not only to meet their international buyers and learn more about the Fair Trade industry, but also to visit their prized products on store shelves.
