On April 10th, (and repeated in some cases throughout the week) PBS will broadcast the independent film Black Gold.
The Fairtrade Labelling Organizations (FLO) announced this week that the Fairtrade social premium on coffee will increase from 5 cents per pound to 10 cents per pound for Fair Trade coffee in a few months. The premium, paid by coffee buyers in addition to the coffee price, is a key and unique feature of the Fair Trade system. Most people only think of Fair Trade in terms of floor prices, which are intended to cover cost of production and act as a safety net for small farmers.
I had a chance to witness a truly surreal event last week:A sell out audience of two thousand people filling a theatre to hear a conversation about food supply chains and production. A Fortune 500 CEO receiving several ovations in Berkeley. That same CEO showing a five minute clip outlining some horrible animal welfare abuses in his industry (with a commitment to be part of the solution).
As a kid, I loved comic books. Part of the fun was perusing the ads in the back for cheap toys and gag gifts.
The theme of this week’s entry is things that begin with the letter "C".
