permata-gayo-neighborhood-children-ethical-bean-website5Fair Trade is a path to rebuilding after natural catastrophes and the ravages of war for many communities worldwide. This is true for the coffee cooperatives of Aceh in Northern Indonesia.

Aceh is located on the northernmost tip of Sumatra, the largest of Indonesia’s many islands. For three decades, violent civil war drove many farmer families from their homes. A destructive tsunami in 2004 inspired a cease-fire and peace agreement. Farmers were able to return to their lands, but found them devastated by war and natural disaster.

Fair Trade USA visited new and growing cooperatives in the Aceh region this past summer. An inspiring example - Permato Gayo Cooperative was founded four years ago by just 50 small-scale farmers and has now grown to 1,400 members!

Permato Gayo Cooperative’s Fair Trade earnings have been spent to support the community and improve the cooperative’s coffee business:

·         transition to organic farming

·         85 grass cutting machines to replace the use of chemical herbicides

·         women’s training programs in sewing and healthcare

·         women’s micro-credit program

·         computer and accounting skills training

·         coffee quality improvement

You can help Fair Trade USA help cooperatives like Permato Gayo rebuild their communities. An independent non-profit, Fair Trade USA must fundraise to be able to support the global Fair Trade network of farmers and workers.  We are working hard to ensure farmers have the organizational and market linkage tools to sell their coffee on the Fair Trade market. Fair Trade USA uses donation funds to connect cooperatives like Permato Gayo with U.S. businesses that will buy their product on Fair Trade terms.

Fair Trade Month is a wonderful time to donate. If you make a donation of $15 or more this October, Fair Trade USA’s board of directors will match your contribution – doubling its dollar value and impact. Join us-click here to donate today.
