Finding Fair Trade Produce Year Round

01/24/2012 - 10:40 AM

Fair Trade Certified PineappleDuring these cold winter months it’s important to keep your immune system strong by having your daily fill of fruits and vegetables. And since local produce has essentially disappeared until spring/summer, those crispy bell peppers and juicy mangos at your neighborhood grocery likely came from another country.

Fair Trade Certified MangoAs you browse the produce section of your local market throughout the winter, be sure to look for the Fair Trade Certified label. Purchasing Fair Trade Certified produce assures you that the fruits and vegetables in your shopping cart were grown with respect for the environment. It also ensures that the farmers and workers who made it possible for you to eat delicious produce in the middle of winter were paid fair wages and received community development funds. If you are eating a banana from Mexico, your purchase directly contributed to scholarships for the farmer’s children. Did you pick up a Fair Trade Certified mango from Haiti? That helped farmers rebuild their communities and businesses after the devastating earthquake in 2010.

Over the next few weeks we will be featuring stories from our produce partners so you can see more examples of how your Fair Trade purchases benefit the health, community and environment of international farmers. We have also created a handy guide so you can see the seasonal availability of your favorite Fair Trade produce (see below).

So stay healthy this winter with fresh, succulent produce while making a difference in the lives of people around the world. Every time you find yourself in the produce section, remember that Every Purchase Matters.
