Marilu Henner, internationally acclaimed actress, author of seven healthy lifestyle and cookery books and the founder of Total Health Makeover, uses Wholesome Sweeteners' Fair Trade Certified Organic Sucanat to sweeten this classic recipe.

Sucanat, which stands for Sugar Cane Natural, retains the taste and nutrients of sugar cane and is produced without the use of herbicides, pesticides or chemicals. Sucanat is created when whole cane juice has been rapidly evaporated and hand-paddled to create a dry, porous, free-flowing organic brown sugar. The final product contains 13% molasses and 87% sucrose so it is lower on the glycemic index than regular sugar.

Featured Fair Trade Recipe

Marilu’s Effortless Brownies

Ingredients:

1½ sticks margarine (preferably soy)

12 ounces Fair Trade Certified semi-sweet baking chocolate (chips melt very quickly)

2 cups Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Sucanat

1-tablespoon Fair Trade Certified vanilla extract

5 lge cage-free eggs, beaten

1¼ cups unbleached flour

½ teaspoon sea salt

 

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease a 13 x 9-inch metal baking pan.

In a 3-quart saucepan over low heat, melt the margarine and chocolate.  With a wooden spoon, stir in the Sucanat and vanilla.  Beat in the eggs until well blended. Stir the flour and salt into the chocolate mixture just until blended.  Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.  Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted 1 inch from the edge of the pan comes out clean.  Cool completely in the pan. When cool, cut into 24 squares.
