Four weeks ago I joined the small but mighty development department at TransFair USA. I am responsible for inspiring corporations and individuals to donate to the Fair Trade cause. This can be daunting in the middle of a recession, but I love it! I am still at the stage where every night I lay out the clothes I am going to wear the next day and bounce out of bed when the alarm goes off.My coworkers reflect a balance of nonprofit and corporate wisdom: a wealth of business, international development, activist, and marketing expertise. I am surrounded by smart, committed people from around the world, many of whom speak multiple languages. We work in a peaceful downtown Oakland office with high ceilings and natural light and I can walk or bike from my apartment. A constant supply of freshly brewed, flavorful Fair Trade Certified coffee keeps ideas flowing! In every meeting I learn something new, hear an acronym I can’t identify, and discover an international city or even country I have to look for on a map. At the end of every day, I am exhausted and energized, confident I am part of something important-a global network of fair, responsible, sustainable trade. Tell me something you love about your job!
