Do you have an environmentalist in your life?

give-a-farmer-an-alternative-to-clear-cuttingI just finished Giving a Farmer an Alternative to Clear-cutting in honor of my little sister! I can’t imagine a better gift for her – she has always loved nature and cared about saving the environment. When we were little she would force me to watch nature programs on TV, we relished family camping trips, she was the president of our high school’s Eco-Club, and now she works for an environmental advocacy organization.

The beautiful e-card she just received from Fair Trade USA explains how Fair Trade makes small-scale farming economically viable and prevents deforestation. Thanks to Fair Trade prices, farmers earn enough money from their crops and are less likely to sell the wood on their land to make a decent living.

Most Fair Trade Certified™ coffee is grown under the shade of natural forest canopy - crucial habitat for a diverse array of plants and animals, such as birds. My sister will also be happy to learn about the strict environmental standards that Fair Trade cooperatives follow, and about the conservation projects they undertake using social premium funds. The Fair Trade coffee and sugar cooperative COOPEAGRI in Costa Rica spends social premium funds on reforestation, organic fertilizer production, and soil conservation.

A Gift of Fairness in support of Fair Trade USA and Fair Trade environmental protections is the ideal gift for my little sister. Do you have any environmentalists on your holiday list?
