Community Development in Capucas, Honduras
How Cooperativa Cafetalera Capucas Limitada uses Fair Trade community development funds
In the mountains of Honduras is the village of Capucas, home to Cooperativa Cafetalera Capucas Limitada (COCAFCAL). This coffee farmer cooperative has more than 70 members, all of whom are dedicated to growing some of the best coffee in the world.
COCAFCAL has used their Fair Trade community development funds to invest in their community in a variety of ways. These investments can be seen from high above the village.
Residents of Capucas once had to travel several hours to access basic healthcare, but now they can walk into their own community health center. The center was funded by COCAFCAL's Fair Trade community development funds, and is stocked with nebulizers and other important health equipment to accomodate the everyday needs of Capucas.
Capucas is also now home to a brand new computer lab, built to increase educational opportunities for both children and adults. Since COCAFCAL is committed to environmental protection and conserving resources, the community chose to reuse an old shipping container to house the computer lab.
While the computer lab is only a few months old, the students are already very comfortable using the machines.
The farmers of COCAFCAL haven’t overlooked the importance of recreation to health and community-building either, and they have used Fair Trade community development funds to build a soccer field where the whole community plays.
Clearing the land needed for a full-size soccer field in the mountains of Honduras was no easy task, but it was well worth it. This venue for fun and exercise is a great example of how Fair Trade touches many aspects of social development.
COCAFCAL is an inspiring model of the many ways Fair Trade can impact not only farmers, but their entire communities as well. The new health center, computer lab, and soccer field in Capucas are just a few examples, and we can’t wait to see what this group does next.
