I just returned from a three week bicycle tour of Nicaragua with Meghan, another TransFairian, where we visited some of CECOCAFEN's small coffee farms - La Pita, and La Reyna.  It was an amazing experience to say the least.
By now, you all know that it's Fair Trade Month. It's also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, something that's very near and dear to my heart. There is a history of breast cancer among the women of my family. Ten years ago my mother was diagnosed.
Chances are, if you woke up this morning, on the last day of September, and felt the slight chill in the air that marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall you thought first of brewing a hot cup of coffee. The same moment you awoke, a banana farmer in Ecuador wiped the morning dew from bunch of green bananas as he took his machete to the stem, a farmer on a cooperative in Ghana tended to a cocoa tree in the afternoon heat, and on a tea estate in India a worker watched the sun set over a sprawling field of tea.
Two months ago I began fundraising for TransFair USA, inspiring individuals and corporations to contribute to a cause I believe in. While most of our work is financed by licensing fees paid by U.S. retailers to sell products with the Fair Trade Certified ™ label, a substantial portion comes from donations.
Starbucks fans are sharing their excitement over Fair Trade coffee. In support of the upcoming Fair Trade Month, October 2009, Starbucks highlighted their Fair Trade Certified Cafe Estima Blend on Facebook.
